Horses quickly became an essential part of American Indian life upon their arrival in the new World. Because there was no word for this animal in Native languages, they were called elk dogs, spirit dogs or sacred dogs. Their lives and souls were treasured, and their place often crossed the boundaries between dreams and reality.
